REPORTING STRUCTURE:
The Operating Company CFO (OpCo CFO) is a key organizational leader contributing to strategic creation, planning, deployment, cultural leadership, transformation, and operational execution. The staff positions that report directly to the OpCo CFO typically include finance and accounting staff.
PERFORMANCE PROFILE:
The CFO is an integral part of the Operating Company’s senior management team, serving as a true business partner and financial counsel to leadership, involving strategic planning, decision making, and implementation, compliance, and reporting to support corporate objectives. The CFO also interfaces proactively with Steel Partners, including regular interaction with its leadership team.
Specifically, the CFO will:
- Build a data-driven culture fostering profitable growth and improved decision making.
- Actively seek out and partner with all levels of the business to increase overall financial acumen.
- Ensure accurate and timely submission of segment financial reporting and forecasting to Steel Partners, providing insight and sound financial analysis for senior management.
- Identify new profit opportunities within the existing business.
- Support expansion efforts in existing and new markets through organic growth and a robust acquisition strategy, including participating in pre-acquisition discussions, directing due diligence, valuation, and post-acquisition integration.
- Maintain financial integrity in accordance with GAAP and Sarbanes-Oxley controls.
- Ensure the profitability of the business.
- Hold full accountability for the integrity of the segment operating companies (OpCo) and their financial statements, forecasting business activity and financial position as required.
- Support Steel Partners in ensuring corporate financial policies, procedures, and controls are effectively implemented and maintained.
- Manage and develop the financial and clerical accounting functions.

Position Profile
Business Partnership – Strategic Planning
- Proactive partner to sales, operations, and other functions in decision making, including investments and M&A.
- Support annual Strategy Deployment Process (SDP) and general business planning at segment and OpCo levels by recommending objectives that promote financial growth and stability.
- Advise on trends and regulations in the financial and manufacturing industries to ensure compliance and effectiveness.
- Participate with the President in developing overall strategic plans for the business as a key leader in the SDP.
Business Performance & Analysis
- Drive the Steel Partners Business System throughout Segment Finance using tools such as Lean and 80/20.
- Develop and recommend strategies to improve profitability.
- Ensure compliance with Steel Partners’ policies, procedures, controls, and reporting systems.
- Maintain or implement improved internal reporting and information systems to support decision-making, including budgets, financial reporting, forecasting, and analysis.
- Provide strong analysis and communication to Steel Partners management on financial matters.
- Benchmark financial performance internally and externally, comparing against plans, and advise on strategies to resolve issues.
- Evaluate acquisitions, conduct financial valuations, due diligence, and communicate effectively with management during merger or acquisition processes.
- Provide routine forecasts to monitor key business drivers and variances, advising on necessary actions.
Finance Function Effectiveness
- Focus on cost efficiency, compliance, reporting, planning, and analysis.
- Develop and maintain accurate financial statements.
- Ensure adequate financial controls and Sarbanes-Oxley compliance.
- Maintain controls over assets, including working capital, fixed assets, and budgets.
- Provide efficient accounting systems covering general ledger, cost accounting, credit, collections, and payables.
- Collaborate with the President and Steel Partners’ management to develop reporting and control systems to resolve operational issues.
People & Organization
- Foster a culture of continuous improvement.
- Build a best-in-class finance team, recruiting new talent as needed.
- Manage and support global finance resources within a matrix structure.
- Develop finance teams to meet changing needs, ensuring performance reviews, retention, and advancement.
- Oversee the finance and accounting department’s operations and organizational structure.
- Develop high-performance teams skilled in lean accounting, operational accounting, and FP&A.
CANDIDATE REQUIREMENTS:
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance is required; MBA preferred.
- CPA/CMA is a plus but not required.
Professional & Personal Characteristics:
- 15+ years of Finance/Controller experience, including 5+ years as a finance leader for a stand-alone operating company or division in a public or private equity setting.
- Experience with multiple manufacturing locations (domestic and international), multi-site operations, complex business, and tax/legal structures.
- Proven ability to partner with senior operations and P&L leadership to drive financial performance in manufacturing.
- Strong command of financial planning & analysis, accounting, and operational finance, including lean principles.
- Hands-on experience in a stand-alone operating company or division of a major global firm.
- Exceptional leadership, influencing, collaboration, communication, and conflict management skills.
- Strong process orientation with a track record of improving finance operations and efficiency.
