Equipment Operator, Sr.
JOB SUMMARY
The purpose of this position is to perform semi-skilled to skilled work functions operating motorized medium to heavy weight equipment to maintain and repair City grounds, sewers, and streets and to provide solid waste collection services.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Operates equipment in one of the following areas: sanitation/solid waste, water/sewer, parks, and streets.
- May serve as a lead worker; provides guidance and instruction to other crew members; and reviews work as assigned.
- Adheres to established safety procedures; monitors work environment and use of safety equipment to ensure safety of employees and other individuals; flags and directs traffic and places markers, signs and cones around project/work site to ensure safety of crew and the traveling public; and follows safety practices and wears protective gear; initiates any actions necessary to correct deviations or violations.
- Drives or operates a variety of purpose equipment in the maintenance and repair of City streets, rights of way, parks, water and sewer lines, and in the collection of solid waste; performs driving functions in a safe and efficient manner under various conditions, including day/night hours, in congested traffic, and in adverse weather conditions.
- Conducts pre- and post-trip inspections, including checking all fluids, gauges, lighting, mirrors, tires, body damage, seats and seatbelts, cleanliness of vehicle, etc.; reports all problems or necessary repairs to appropriate personnel immediately; completes and maintains inspection, gas usage and other associated documentation.
- Performs daily preventive maintenance work on equipment and vehicles; services and makes minor repairs to equipment and vehicles.
- Assists with special projects and seasonal work; installs and removes holiday decorations; installs and removes banners; clears streets and sidewalks of debris following special events; removes and replaces staging materials from sites as needed.
- Uses a variety of hand tools including shovels, hammers, pick axes, rakes, pipe wrenches, channel locks, transit level, tape measure, and carpentry tools.
- Prepares or completes various forms, reports, work orders, logs, accident reports, or other documents.
- Receives various forms, reports, work orders, application instructions or other documents; reviews, completes, processes, forwards or retains as appropriate.
- Communicates with supervisor, employees, other departments, the public, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems.
- Operates one or more of the following: motor graders, tapping machines, spray truck, street sweeper, asphalt roller, grader, dozer, track hoe, patch truck, compost separator, compost blower, front end loader, box blade, beach rake, sprayers, tractor trailer, roll-off truck, knuckle boom truck, front and rear loaders, dump truck, jack hammer, back hoe, pick-up truck, boring machine, dump truck, mowers, or other equipment as necessary to complete essential functions.
Additional duties vary based on the division assignment:
Parks Division
- Performs or assists in performing a variety of maintenance and landscaping duties; repairs sidewalks and curbs; mows grass; paints equipment; cleans and rakes beach areas; empties garbage cans; plants flowers and shrubs; trims trees; etc.
- May assist in other departments, such as yard waste, garbage, recycling pickup, storm drain and ditch cleaning, etc.
Solid Waste Division
- Drives garbage truck on assigned route; collects yard waste, garbage, and recycling for pickup; and collects dead animals.
- Removes debris from transfer station; clears obstructions; operates chipping and compost equipment; maintains yard area cleanliness.
- Provides dumpster service citywide; services compactor sites; guides truck drivers in congested areas.
Streets Division
- Performs maintenance and landscaping duties; repairs sidewalks and curbs; cleans storm drains and ditches; patches potholes; shovels stone; seals cracks; repairs street signs; grades ditches for stormwater pipes; lays pipes; builds stormwater drain boxes; repairs storm drains; maintains streets; repairs utility cuts; operates street sweeper.
Water/Sewer Division
- Repairs leaks and installs water and sewer lines; may need a class “D” Water Distribution License.
Additional Functions
- Attends meetings, workshops, and training as needed.
- Assists in hurricane and natural disaster preparations and cleanup.
- Performs other related duties as assigned, requested, and required.
Minimum Qualifications
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- One (1) year of experience in equipment operation.
Licenses or Certifications
- Must possess and maintain a valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with appropriate endorsements.
- May be required to obtain and maintain other certifications.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of equipment operations and customer service principles. Skills in gathering information, using logic to solve problems, performing basic math, and dealing with frustrations. Abilities include collaboration, building rapport, listening, analyzing beyond the obvious, data management, operating complex equipment, and exercising judgment and creativity in evaluation and decision-making.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The work is heavy work involving moving objects up to 20 pounds constantly, 30 pounds frequently, and up to 100 pounds occasionally. Additional physical requirements include balancing, climbing, feeling, grasping, handling, hearing, lifting, manual dexterity, mental acuity, pulling, pushing, reaching, repetitive motions, speaking, standing, stooping, visual acuity, and walking.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Work is performed outdoors, potentially exposing employees to dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature extremes, confined spaces, machinery, vibrations, electric currents, traffic hazards, bright/dim lights, or toxic agents. The environment involves heavy equipment and machinery that could pose risks of bodily harm.
